Natural Gas Meter Upgrades
Gas Usage EvaluationS
Your natural gas meter and service have been sized to provide enough fuel to run the existing appliances in your home. Adding a natural gas standby generator to your home will require the fuel demands of your home to be refigured. In most cases, the meter will need to be upgraded by the utility company to provide enough fuel to run the existing appliances along with the generator.
The information we will provide you will make this a fairly simple and inexpensive upgrade. In rare cases, the service coming from the street is inadequate which can be more complicated and potentially costly. If this is the case the gas company would install a new line from the street to your house. This is not typical but needs to be determined prior to installing a generator…not after.
During your in-home consultation, our estimator will go through the existing appliances in your home that use natural gas. We will provide you with estimated BTU calculations of the home + the generator and the capacity of the existing meter. This will help determine if adding the generator to your home will require the service meter to be upgraded by the utility company. We will provide you with a summary sheet that will give you all of the information you need for the gas company evaluation. If the meter needs to be upgraded, the gas company will provide you with a quotation to do so (usually around $110), and schedule this upgrade. This is done independently of the generator installation and scheduled and paid for directly between the owner and the gas company.
